Een online platform waar wetenschappers mensen kunnen vragen deel te nemen aan hun onderzoek. Een platform gericht op de Nederlandse maatschappij waarmee onderzoekers data kunnen verzamelen die specifiek is aan de Nederlandse taal en/of context. Een platform waar Nederlanders heel eenvoudig een bijdrage kunnen leveren aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek, vanzelfsprekend tegen een correcte vergoeding en met goede privacybescherming.

Dit was het idee waarmee we in 2019 een aanvraag schreven voor subsidie vanuit het Platform Digitale Infrastructuur-SSH (PDI-SSH). En helemaal fantastisch natuurlijk dat we die subsidie nog gekregen hebben ook! Met “we” bedoel ik Antske Fokkens, Ivar Vermeulen en ikzelf, Martin Tanis, vanuit de Vrije Universiteit en Agneta Fischer van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Al tijdens het schrijven van het voorstel hebben we nauw samengewerkt met Adrienne Mendrik van platform ontwikkelaar Eyra, en samen met hen zijn we nu panl aan het ontwikkelen.

Of het nu gaat om het werven van deelnemers aan experimenteel onderzoek of enquêtes, de ontwikkeling van vragenlijsten of meetinstrumenten, of om studies die menselijke annotaties van tekst gegevens, artefacten of beelden vereisen, toegang tot input van mensen is voor velen van ons in de sociale- gedrags- of geesteswetenschappen van essentieel belang. Met panl willen we wetenschappers een platform bieden waarop ze in contact kunnen komen met proefpersonen, respondenten of codeurs op een eenvoudige, snelle, en niet onbelangrijk, relatief goedkope manier. Eenvoudig omdat de panl omgeving het makkelijk maakt om je studie te publiceren, contact te houden met je deelnemers, en de voortgang in de gaten te houden. Snel omdat je met één klik op de knop de studie kunt presenteren aan een grote en diverse pool van deelnemers die meteen aan je onderzoek kunnen beginnen. Relatief goedkoop omdat panl een initiatief is zonder winstoogmerk.

Met panl ontwikkelen we dus een soort marktplaats waar wetenschappers studies aan kunnen bieden en waaraan Nederlanders (of Nederlands sprekenden) deel kunnen nemen. En, misschien nog wel het belangrijkste, via panl kun je ook direct je deelnemers uitbetalen. Dus, geen gedoe meer met tegoedbonnen, lastige gesprekken met de financiële afdeling van je faculteit en ga zo maar door. Je hebt je eigen budget op panl en na afloop van de studie kun je met een druk op de knop al je deelnemers uitbetalen.

Hoe ver zijn we nu? We zijn een flink stukje over de helft van het ontwikkelproject. De eerste pilots zijn afgerond en deze hebben laten zien dat we een robuust platform hebben. Natuurlijk leveren die pilots ook weer veel nieuwe inzichten op die we eerst willen verwerken voordat we het platform voor de buitenwereld open kunnen stellen. Het komt er dus aan, maar nog even geduld.

How it all began…

An online platform where researchers can ask people to take part in their research. A platform aimed at Dutch society that allows researchers to collect data specific to the Dutch language and/or context. A platform where Dutch people can easily contribute to academic research, while, without question, receiving fair compensation and with good privacy protection.

This was the idea we had in mind when we wrote an application in 2019 for a subsidy from the Digital Infrastructure-SSH Platform (PDI-SSH). And, we received the fantastic news that we got the subsidy! By “we” I mean Antske Fokkens, Ivar Vermeulen and myself, Martin Tanis, from the Vrije Universiteit and Agneta Fischer from the University of Amsterdam. Already during the writing of the proposal, we were working together with Adrienne Mendrik from platform developer Eyra, and we are now developing panl together with them.

Whether it comes to recruiting participants for experimental research or surveys, developing questionnaires or measurement tools, or studies that regard human annotations of text data, artifacts, or images, accessing human input is important to many of us in the social- and behavioral sciences or humanities. With panl we want to provide a platform where you can get in touch with respondents of coders in a simple, fast, and not unimportantly, reasonably cheap way. Simple because the panl environment makes it easy to publish your study, keep in touch with your research participants, and keep track of the entire progress. Fast because with one click of a button you can present your study to a large and diverse pool of participants who can immediately start your research. Relatively cheap because panl is a non-profit initiative.

So, with panl we are developing a kind of marketplace where new studies can be offered in which Dutch citizens (or Dutch speakers) can participate. And, perhaps the most important, you can also pay your participants directly via panl. So, no more hassle with vouchers, awkward conversations with the financial department of your faculty and so on. You have your own budget on panl and after the end of the study you can pay all your participants with the push of a button.

How far are we now? We are a far bit over halfway of the development project. The first pilots have been completed and have shown that we have a robust platform. Of course these pilots also provided us with many new insights which we first want to process before presenting the platform to the outside world. So it’s coming, only a little bit more patience…
